Benghisa Reef, located off the coast of Marsaxlokk, is a unique underwater reef in Malta. This reef extends over two miles into the sea, making it one of the most captivating dive sites in the region. Its remote location and the natural layout of the reef make it a challenging yet rewarding spot for spearfishing enthusiasts.
Potential trophy: Swordfish, Albacore, Spearfish
Dive Site Overview: Strong Currents and the Challenge of Spearfishing
During our recent dive at Benghisa Reef, we encountered strong currents, likely a frequent challenge at this site. These currents add an extra layer of difficulty, particularly for those new to spearfishing in Malta. However, the reward is well worth it. The reef is teeming with marine life, and the sense of accomplishment after a successful dive here is unmatched.
The Reef’s Topography: Depths and Drop-offs
The upper plateau of Benghisa Reef lies at a depth of 12-15 meters, making it accessible for most spearfishers. For those with more experience, the reef features vertical walls with drop-offs at 20, 30 meters, and beyond. This in-depth variety provides excellent opportunities for spearfishing different species, making Benghisa Reef a must-visit location for anyone serious about spearfishing in Malta.
Abundant Marine Life for Spearfishing Enthusiasts
Although I wasn’t entirely focused on spearfishing during my dive, I couldn’t help but notice the incredible abundance of marine life. Large rays, numerous blue runners, and vast schools of seabream were just some of the highlights. The variety and size of fish at Bengis Reef make it an attractive snorkeling destination in Malta.
Bengisa Reef in Marsaxlokk is one of the best spearfishing spots in Malta. However, safety is paramount. Given the possible currents and passing boats, hunting from your own boat is much safer.
Sultan Rock
The area is practically between two islands, ; usually, a rather strong current forms here, but. in combination with a rocky bottom and always clear water, it is an excellent area for hunting.

This is a very large reef with a flat and rocky bottom. Some areas are partly covered with seaweed, and others are bare and hardly explored.
Della Larga Forca
A reef that goes out to sea for more than 1 mile. The bottom is covered with rocks and poseidonia. It is a very good place for fishing. Nearby is a submerged shoal around which you can often find large fish.
Munxar Sekka

Zonqor Reef
A wild and close underwater hill. There are never snorkelers, and very rarely are boats anchored here.
